Overstock Drops Fur

Happy to see (via HSUS) that Overstock.com just became the first major online retailer to drop fur from its offerings. In an interview with HSUS, Patrick Byrne, the CEO of Overstock.com, talked about how they made the decision:

I already understood that animals are not just objects. Someone could sit in a business meeting and take out a knife and a block of wood, and start whittling: it would seem odd, but would not be morally objectionable. If, however, someone took out a knife and a live rabbit, and started whittling, that would be both strange and morally objectionable. Hence, animals are not objects.

I knew that much already. But HSUS sent Kristin Leppert to see me, and as she was discussing the fur industry I began to understand that it really does treat animals simply as objects. Decorative objects, but objects nonetheless. So I realized we should stop having any part of it.

Thanksliving 2007

Yesterday was Thanksliving 2007 at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary.

It was a fantastic event, which started with meeting three baby lambs recently arrived:

We also toured around the farm and took some photos and met some animals before dinner began see the photoset at flickr.

The menu was, as expected, absolutely fantastic, featuring food from Isa Chandra Moskowitz, Little Vegan Monsters, and Vegan Treats as well as local restaurants Cafe Mezzaluna, The Red Onion, Garden Cafe, Karma Road Cafe, and Joshua’s Cafe:

In addition to the food, the day included Dan Piraro as comic emcee, Jenny Brown talking about the sanctuary’s mission, Brian Shapiro (local Ulster country legislator), Paul Shapiro (founder of Compassion over Killing, now senior director of factory farming campaign for the HSUS), and Colleen Patrick-Goudreau (of Compassionate Cooks, and author of the Joy of Vegan Baking). Closing out the night was Ida playing a pretty intimate set in the dinner tent.

This is really an event not to be missed. If they sold tickets to next years thanksliving at the end of this one, I think we’d have bought them!

Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary Thanksliving

The good folks at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary hold a major event the weekend before the observance of Thanksgiving in the US. The basic idea is a major party where the Turkeys are the guests of honor rather than the main course: celebrating (and raising money for) compassion.

In addition to the food (main dish prepared by Isa Chandra Moskowitz) this year’s event includes:

  • Music by Elizabeth Mitchell and Daniel Littleton (more commonly known as Ida)
  • Comedy by Dan Piraro (of Bizarro)
  • Paul Shapiro from HSUS and Colleen Patrick-Goudreau of Compassionate Cooks

As well as, I assume, various tours of the sanctuary and other opportunities to meet the animals they take care of.

We missed this last year, but we’re very much looking forward to being there this year.
