For now I've just disabled ajax-comments. In terms of <a href="http://singpolyma.net/plugins/allavatars/" rel="nofollow">AllAvatars</a> what I've done is create a new "uber avatars" plugin, based on <a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mbla/" rel="nofollow">MBLA plugin</a>, with <a href="http://dev.wp-plugins.org/wiki/favatars" rel="nofollow">Favatars</a> and <a href="http://singpolyma.net/plugins/avatar-from-url/" rel="nofollow">Avatar from URL</a> added in as additional choices.
